Recent months have seen several significant contract awards and procurement published for the waste and highways sectors within Great Britain.
For the municipal sector:
- Scottish Borders Council awarded a £9.5 million contract to Cireco (Scotland) LLP for the treatment and disposal of residual waste and street sweepings. The 17-month contract commenced in July 2025.
- Cheshire East Council appointed FCC to manage and operate its household waste recycling centres. The contract, started in September 2025, and is valued at £28 million. It includes the complete management of the HWRCs, from the residual waste haulage to the treatment, recovery and disposal of all other waste.
Outside the municipal waste sector, BDS track a wide variety of multi-disciplinary contracts that involve sectors including highways term maintenance, ground maintenance, leisure and street cleansing. Examples of recent procurement or anticipated procurement include:
- Braintree District Council partnered with Freedom Leisure (Sept 2025) for the management of its leisure facilities including Braintree Sports & Health Club, Halstead Leisure Centre, Braintree Swim and Fitness, Witham Leisure Centre and Witham Sports Ground. The £13.8 million contract is expected to run for three years.
- Nottingham City Council is planning to publish a procurement in September 2026 for its highways carriageway planned maintenance framework. The £25 million contract is expected to run from February 2027 to January 2031.
