Cemex has secured planning consent for a major upgrade to its Rugby Cement Plant in Warwickshire. The project is aimed at reducing the plant’s carbon footprint and increasing the capacity to produce blended, low-carbon cement. The application was submitted in July 2023 and is part of the company’s CO2 reduction Strategy.
Cemex, a producer of cement, concrete and other building materials, has operated the Rugby Cement Plant since early 2000, with an annual capacity of ~1.3 million tonnes of cement. The newly consented scheme will introduce a vertical roller cement mill, the construction of a raw material storage, the extension of the gypsum storage, demolition of two silos and the installation of eight new concrete silos and one plasterboard silo to support the production of blended cement. The development will also allow the partial replacement of clinker with by-products such as fly ash and blast furnace slag.
