Eppleton Quarry, Sunderland, could remain operational until 2048 under plans to extend the life of the site to support the recovery of the remaining ~11 million tonnes of limestone and ~3.5 million tonnes of sand.
Eppleton Quarry Products Ltd has recently submitted a planning application to seek for an eight-year time extension, alongside changes to the quarry boundary, to increase the working area from ~35.5 hectares to ~42.7 hectares, and a major revised restoration scheme.
The quarry would retain its existing access from the B1404, while a new weighbridge and one-way HGV system would improve vehicle movements around the site. Site restoration would include importing ~5.6 million tonnes of inert construction and demolition material over ~22 years, averaging about 250,000 tonnes annually. In time, the restored quarry will form an extension to Hetton Lyons Country Park, incorporating grassland, woodland and walking routes.
