Planning consent has been approved for Ryan Jones Group for the development of an aggregate recovery facility at Fforest Wood Quarry, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales. The planning application, approved in January 2026 for the recovery of ~ 1 million tonnes of quarry by-products over a five-year period, includes the processing of construction and demolition waste for the production of 200,000 tonnes of recycled aggregates per annum.
The approved development occupies approximately 1.68 hectares within the existing operational quarry. The wider site comprises a flooded quarry void to the west, an asphalt plant, offices and access road to the east. The new facility works include limited excavation and regrading works to create level areas for the aggregate recovery plant, tipping, crushing and storage.
The purpose of the development is to recover usable aggregate materials from construction and demolition waste, alongside continued supply of primary aggregates from the quarry. This will increase recycling rates, reduce waste and preserve mineral resources. The development also allows for the recovery of materials from historic quarry by-products stored on site allowing these materials to then be processed and supplied to local markets.
The aggregates recovery facility will operate in line with the approved planning consent, with a maximum throughput of up to 200,000 tonnes per year, including quarry by-product and imported construction and demolition waste. Operations will be phased, with the historic quarry by-products processed in the early years, followed by the continued processing of construction and demolition.
