Heidelberg Materials has secured planning consent for an extension at Tytherington Quarry, South Gloucestershire. Approved in April 2025, this application allows for the extraction of an additional 3 million tonnes of limestone from within the existing quarry area.
Tytherington Quarry contains an asphalt plant and a direct rail link, enabling supply to local and national markets. The new consent secures approximately three additional years of limestone reserves, ensuring continued operations up to the 2042 end date of the original planning consent.
The current site maintains a high output, with aggregate HGV movements averaging 38,600 HGV’s per year, 3,000 loads are imported to their asphalt plant. The limestone produced at Tytherington is nationally significant, supporting the manufacture of ready-mixed concrete, precast products and asphalt for road construction and maintenance. The material is utilised for major infrastructure projects such as Hinkley Point C, a nuclear power station currently under construction, and the UK’s cross rail networks. Additionally, the limestone could be utilised to serve regional developments such as the proposed Buckover Garden Village.
The Tytherington Quarry consent is of particular importance for the building and highways industry. The newly published BDS Highways Term Maintenance Contract Register 2025 identified over 30 contracts for the South West region, highlighting the ongoing demand for aggregates and asphalt to maintain and upgrade UK’s road network.
