Changes in government policy including increases in the landfill tax, are resulting in waste streams being diverted from landfill to recycling, reuse and other disposal methods.
BDS publishes an annual report that lists the estimated inputs of all landfill companies in the industry. This is used by companies to monitor their market share with their competitors. Potential investors in the sector use the information to assess possible development opportunities. A separate landfill database includes details of recent planning decisions and estimates of landfill void space.
Separate reports detail contracts for disposal, collection and treatment of household waste. A composting database has also been developed. Monthly planning reports monitor planned developments for all companies in this sector. In a typical month, there are over 100 proposals for new waste management schemes.
In view of the changes to the waste industry and the lack of sound marketing information, BDS is planning to develop a number of other reports. These will relate to civic amenity sites, information on waste to energy schemes and quarterly waste disposal trends.
