Two 10 million tonne limestone quarry extensions granted
Tarmac has received consent, subject to the signing of a S106 agreement, for a proposed extension to its dolomitic limestone operation in the Forest of Dean. The consent provides 10.3 million tonnes of reserves to be extracted over a period of 13 years. The consent also includes permission to increase output from the quarry from 800,000 tonnes p.a. to 1.2 million tonnes p.a.
Elsewhere, Darrington Quarries, part of the WRG Group, has received consent for an extension to its limestone quarry at Cridling Stubbs, West Yorkshire. The consent allows the extraction of approximately 10 million tonnes of magnesian limestone from an area of 45.5 ha’s over 18 years. The consent is also subject to the signing of a S106 agreement.

Major waste development approved at appeal
The Secretary of State has allowed an appeal by Gent Fairhead & Co Ltd for the development of an integrated waste management facility at Rivenhall Airfield, near Witham in Essex. The facility will include an anaerobic digestion plant producing biogas converted to electricity, a materials recycling facility for mixed dry recyclable waste, a mechanical biological treatment plant, a paper recycling plant and a combined heat and power plant. The decision was issued in March 2010 and will allow up to 1 million tonnes of waste to be processed at the site per annum.

Cemex UK Cement
Cemex has officially opened its new £49m cement grinding and blending plant at the Port of Tilbury in Essex . Tilbury is the only cement works based in the South East and can produce up to 1.2 million tonnes per annum, expanding the company’s capacity in the UK by 20%. The plant also boasts the first vertical mill in the country, using 20-40% less energy than the traditional horizontal design.

Milton Keynes and Northants waste contract moves forward
The shortlist for the proposed joint Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire waste treatment contract has been cut to four. In the latest round of the tendering process six companies were dropped. The remaining companies vying for the 400,000 tonnes per year contract are Biffa, Covanta Energy, WRG and a consortium comprising Shanks and Wheelabrator. Named Project Reduce, the contract is due to receive £138 million in PFI funding and should be in place by 2014.
