May Gurney expands its waste portfolio

May Gurney has strengthened its position as a leading operator in the municipal waste collection and recycling sector. In a deal valued at £3.4 million the company has acquired ECT Recycling from the community services group, ECT. The deal includes a forward order book worth £175 million, with possible contract extensions valued at up to £340 million. ECT will now focus its efforts on its community transport services.

Dry silo mortar planning developments

Two contrasting decisions have recently been taken on applications to construct new dry silo mortar plants. Firstly, Tarmac has had an application refused at a site near Redhill. Meanwhile, Remix Dry Mortars, based in Fareham, has received consent for a dry silo mortar and bagging plant in Bromborough, to the north-west of Ellesmere Port in the Wirral. International Conference: Excellence in Concrete Construction - through Innovation

The 2008 conference will be held at Kingston University in south-west London on the 9-10th September.

Its main themes focus on how the industry meets the challenges of new materials, new technologies, environmental concerns and economic factors to maintain its excellence. Sponsored by the American Concrete Institute and supported by the British Cement Association and the Asian Institute of Technology, among others, the event is global in nature.

Housing registrations show downturn
Recent figures from the National House-Building Council (NHBC) show the number of applications to start new homes in the UK showed a fall of 22% between December 2007 and February 2008 against the same period last year. There were nearly 36,000 applications to start new homes in the three months to February 2008, down from over 45,000 year-on-year. Private sector housing figures were down 24% and housing association starts down 11%. The number of completions year-on-year also showed a drop, although less sharp, of around 4%.

Cambridgeshire close waste management deal
A 28-year £730million PFI contract to provide waste management services in Cambridgeshire has reached financial closure. The contract is with Donarbon Waste Management and will include the construction of a new mechanical biological (MBT) treatment plant at Waterbeach that will process up to 170,000 tonnes of household waste per annum. Also included in the contract is the management of 11 household waste recycling facilities.
