Cemex UK Cement
Cemex has officially opened its new £49m cement grinding and blending plant at the Port of Tilbury in Essex . Tilbury is the only cement works based in the South East and can produce up to 1.2 million tonnes per annum, expanding the company’s capacity in the UK by 20%. The plant also boasts the first vertical mill in the country, using 20-40% less energy than the traditional horizontal design.

CONCRETE2010 - British Precast Conference and Exhibition May 11th 2010
The annual conference and exhibition will be held at the Athena Conference Centre, Leicester. Events will include presentation of the British Precast Best Practice awards, technical and environmental advice surgeries and a major exhibition of supply chain members and partners. The main speaker is Judith Hackitt, Chair of the HSE.

Energy from Waste bio-gas plant approved in Scotland
South Lanarkshire Council has given the go-ahead on a £22.5m biogas facility that will turn waste into energy with the potential to power 2,800 homes. Proactive Energy, a new and pioneering renewable energy company has had its plans for a five megawatt anaerobic digestion plant approved.  Up to 135,000 tonnes of organic waste will be processed per annum with the electricity generated fed into the Nation Grid. The plant will be the first to adorn the new M74 Eco-Park, based between Glasgow and Carlisle .  Construction will start by April 2010 and the plant is scheduled to begin operations by the first quarter of 2011

New quarry receives green light in Scotland
Collier Group has received planning consent for a new hardstone quarry at a site known as Bucklyvie Farm, near Cowdenbeath in Fife . The plans allow for the extraction of approximately 3.2 million tonnes of dolerite over 15 years. Operations are expected to commence on-site in Quarter 1 2010.

Milton Keynes
and Northants waste contract moves forward
The shortlist for the proposed joint Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire waste treatment contract has been cut to four. In the latest round of the tendering process six companies were dropped. The remaining companies vying for the 400,000 tonnes per year contract are Biffa, Covanta Energy, WRG and a consortium comprising Shanks and Wheelabrator. Named Project Reduce, the contract is due to receive £138 million in PFI funding and should be in place by 2014.
